You know, Peter, one of my favorite times in school was when the fire alarm

    would go off.

When it was a false alarm, right? When it was like a practice drill.

Exactly, because it would cancel classes and we would just be outside hanging

    out with our friends.

Yeah, it was so fun ,right? Because it's unexpected break time and it would be

in the middle of a lesson, you'd just chat outside as long as the weather was

    fairly temperate.

Exactly. Well you know, I think when they do those fire drills, they plan it so

it's not on a rainy day, right?

Yeah, it was strange how it always used to be a nice (and) sunny warm day.

Exactly, but I remember how we would have to be calm. I remember the teacher

telling us, "Okay, be calm and act like this is a real drill, just in case a fire

did happen" and we'd always have to walk in single file.

    yeah.

Yes, and I remember that the first person out the door would have to touch

the handle, to check if it was hot.

If the fire was on the other side as well.

Right, exactly. And the last person would have to turn the lights off.

Oh, really? Wow. But, you know I think those drills, they really help people

because they do drill into you, a sense of routine. When that dose acually happen,

you'll just go into robot mode and follow single file and go out.

And you'd also assume that every alarm was just a drill, like you'd never

    think it was real.

Right, exactly. But you know when I was even younger in elementary school,

we had to to the stop, drop and roll drill. Have you ever heard of that?

Is that when you're on fire yourself? Right?

Exactly. I remember having to do that drill and practicing it. When you're

on fire you stop, you drop on the ground and you roll to beat the fire out.

And see how effective that is? You still remember it.

    I still remember it. Exactly.

Years and years afterwards. So yeah, it may seem at the time, like a fun

thing to do but it's actually a practical fire safety method, you know.

    It could save my life.

    false alarm

    drill :  preparation, training, warm-up

    temperate :

moderate, mild ( in respect to temperature)

    drop :

    practical

    go off

I thought I heard of a gun go off.

We evacuated the building as soon as the fire alarm went off.

    single file = Indian file

The whole class had to walk out of the school building in a single file.

        Everybody, walk single file!

    drill (into)

I drill twenty Spanish verbs every day.

The idea was drilled into my head.

I think the most important thing is, in your home or in your workplace,

to know where the fire exits are.

You should not take the elevator, if there's a fire because you could

    get stuck in the elevator.

You have fire escapes, regular stariwells and most building have some

    amount of fireproofing.

So I think it's really important just to know where the fire escapes are

    and how to use them.
