You know, Peter, there are a lot of news about accidents happening in the home involving children.

I was wondering what kind of measures you take in protecting your son from getting into an

        accident at home.

Well my wife and I, we are a little bit CD when it comes to safe-proofing or child-proofing our home.

    Right.

Because my son, he's just started walking, so now nowhere is out of bounds. He can get to

everything in our house. So we started off by buying a rubbery foam that you stick on the edge

        of tables and on corners.

And because he's only just started to learn to walk, he keeps on banging his head and falling

over, but if it's foam-protected, it's not so bad. The crying will cease after 30 seconds as

        opposed to 10 minutes.

    That's good idea. yeah.

When I was a child, I got electric shocks a couple of times by touching sockets with wet hands,

which you should never , ever do.

    Oh, goodness.

But obviously as a curious 5-year-old boy, you want to  touch everyting.

    Right.

So we're put these socket protectors that you can put in the sockets you're not using to stop

        kids from touching them.

That's awesome. You know, we actually have to do that as well, but for my grandmother in her

apartment. She lives in an apartment where there are a  lot of senior citizens, so then have

a lot of measures to protect them from getting into accidents like slipping in the bathroom.

    Yeah.

They have an alarm system there. If they fall they can press a button or pull on a string

that sends a signal to the administrative office or to my mom.

    Wow.

Yeah. But just in case she slips, we put in rubber strips and stuff on the bathroom tiles.

So there are a lot of ways you can protect youself from getting into an accident at home.

Yeah, and I think just having either an elderly or a baby in your home makes you want to

do everything that is humanly possible to prevent accidents that you don't usually think

about. But definitely, prevention is better than cure.

    child-proof:

cease: stop, come to an end,

    (wall)-socket: wall plug, electrical outlet

senior citizen: senior, the elderly, respected elder

be a lot of news (on /about ~)

There is a lot of news and information on the latest top stories.

There is a lot of good news about Jay and Lisa.

out of bounds (often followed by 'to')

He stepped onto the sidelines and was considered out of bounds.

The park is out of bounds to students.

the students are not allowed to go into the park

    as opposed to something 而不是,与~正好相反

You should child-proof your house, as opposed to chasing after him every minute of the day.

We're a fun-loving family as oppsed to our next-door neighbors who are always angry at each other.

He is really good-looking, as opposed to his brother.

I've never had any accident in my home, but my father has.

He fell asleep while he was cooking and the entire apartment filled up with smoke.

The fire department had to actually get there and wake him up.

They had to break the door down and get him.

They woke him up and evacuated him from the apartment.

I think it is really important in the home, especially if you live alone, to be careful

        you're cooking.
