    unfamiliar words

A little bit out of the blue, (sudden), Rachel, but have you ever experienced a natural disaster?

No, actually. I've been lucky enough that I've never had to experience tornadoes or typhoones.

I thought there were quite a lot of tornadoes in America, like hurricanes.

There are. Maybe some strong torrential rainfall, but not anything like a hurricane where I live.

    What about in the UK?

The UK is in a very safe zone because although we're famous for getting lots of raining, in London

it rains, I think, nearly half the year.

But there are no extreme weather happenings. There are no natural disasters, no volcanoes no

earthquakes no typhoons nor hurricanes, noting like that.

Oh my goodness. Just recently, I think the Philippines, they had one of the strongest typhoons this

        year.

    Yeah.

Yes, and I think the fatalities were in the really high numbers.

        fatality: death of people

Yeah, it ran into thousands and thousands. And in that case, you know, there's nothing you can do,

because the country is a little bit underdeveloped in certain areas, you know?

    Right.

So you can't really avoid the flooding. There isn't the infrastructure in place to evacuate people

        quick enough.

Yeah, and that's the scary thing about natural disasters, it's just out of your control. You can't

really tell Mother Eeath or Mother Nature, what you want and what you don't want.

    Absolutely.

So it's really hard. And the best thing do to, I guess, is to prepare fo it, right? So if authorities

tell you to evacuate. I think you should. I know that lots of people find affinity to their homes

and they don't want to leave it, but when the authorities say evacuate, it's important to evacute

        and be prepared.

    Sure.

    Just for the worst.

Sure. Yeah, and in places that are hit by earthquakes often or volcanic eruptions, I think it's good

        to have an emergency plan.

Be prepared and go through drills and things like that. I think they do that in many schools in

        those areas.

        drill: 演习

It's a good thing to do.

    Yeah.

    torrential : pouring, flowing fast

    zone: area

    fatality: /fey - tal - i - tee /

        casualty, accident, disaster, death

    infrastructure: base, framework

evacuate : vacate, pull out, remove

    affinity: fondness, affection, sympathy

out of the blue = out of a clear (blue) sky

I got a call from my Ex completely out of the blue.

That was out of the blue.

    be famous for something

Tim is famous for being late for everything.

        What is she famous for?

    not A nor B (neither A nor B)

        It's not easy nor simple.

It's not easy nor is it simple.

        It's neither easy nor simple.

        She neither drinks nor smokes.

be / go out of control = be /get out of hand

My CD player is out of control and playing tracks randomly.

Be careful, that dogs sometimes goes out of control.

The twins got out of hand again. They wouldn't stop running around and screaming.

You have earthquakes, typhoons, forest fires, tsunamis.

        tsunamis : 海啸

If you look at their reoccurrence lately, it seems to be happening more and more often.

And a lot of this seems to be somehow linked to climate change.

The heating up of the planet means it's becoming a drier planet, which means forest fires

are happening more and more often.
